Life of a Famous Missourian

Materials Needed:
- Pencils
- computer access
- performance event packet containing the prompt, student response sheets, guided outline for student writing
Process Standards:
- Goal 1.4 use technological tools and other resources to locate, select and organize information
- Goal 1.8 organize data, information and ideas into useful forms (including charts, graphs, outlines)
- Goal 2.1 plan and make written, oral and visual presentations for a variety of purposes and audiences
Content Standards:
- Communication Arts 1 - Speaking and writing standard English (including grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, ...)
- Communication Arts 3. Reading and evaluating nonfiction works and material (such as biographies, newspap...)
- Communication Arts 4. Writing formally (such as reports, narratives, essays) and informally (such as outlines, notes)
Time Allowance: 4-5 50-minute class periods
Description: Students research and write about a Missourian who has impacted Missouri history--writing, performance event, technology
Classroom Component: This performance event requires that each student research the following information about a Famous Missourian chosen:
- Date of birth and death
- Where in Missouri he/she lived
- What type of education he/she received
- What occupation he/she did for a living
- Challenges he/she faced
- What made he/she famous
- Age and reason for death
Pre-assessment Instruction: Prior to completing this event, students should be able to use electronic as well as written resources to gather information. They will need to have a working knowledge of the writing process. If student chooses to publish final copy via the computer, he or she must be able to perform fluent keyboarding skills.
The Life of a Famous Missourian
Student Prompt
There are many famous people who have come from Missouri. The Governor of Missouri has asked the King City Fourth Grade to present a Wax Museum of Famous Missourians, for one day, at the capitol in Jefferson City.
It is your task to choose a famous Missourian and research their life. You can find your information using the Internet, encyclopedias (electronic or standard), and other written documents. The report must contain the following information about the famous Missourian:
- Date of birth and death
- Where in Missouri he/she lived
- What type of education he/she received
- What made he/she famous
First, gather you information on the Student Response Sheets provided. Afterwards, using the attached outline as a writing guide, put your information together and write a report about your chosen Missourian.
